6pm for 7pm: Vanity Fair, Thackeray and Chiswick
On Thursday September 13th 2018, in the splendid Neo-Palladian surroundings of Chiswick House & Gardens, there will be an evening devoted to William Thackeray and Vanity Fair, which is being serialised on ITV with an all-star cast this autumn.
In 1817, William Thackeray went to school here, in Walpole House by the river on Chiswick Mall – the inspiration for Miss Pinkerton’s Academy in Vanity Fair, where Becky Sharp famously threw a dictionary out of her carriage (left). Few remember that the opening chapter is called ‘Chiswick Mall’. Thackeray wrote Vanity Fair in 1848 and in 1862 attended a grand dinner at Chiswick House.
The speakers will include Thackeray scholar Professor John Sutherland, the writer of the ITV series Gwyneth Hughes, and cast member Claudia Jessie (Line of Duty) below, who plays Amelia Sedley. Chaired by Festival Director Torin Douglas.
